Sciences Academies working together to promote science and technology for development, prosperity and equity in the Americas

IANAS is a regional network of Academies of Sciences created to support cooperation towards the strengthening of science and technology as a tool for advancing research and development, prosperity and equity in the Americas.

Networks are powerful instruments for sharing and rapidly disseminating information, best practices and novel ideas through a larger community. By virtue of their credibility and independence from government, academies have certain inherent advantages in addressing issues related to science, technology and health (STH), and in advancing high quality science education at the national level.    MORE INFORMATION...

The Brazilian Academy of Sciences, on behalf of IANAS, hosted the VII Meeting of the Science Education Program in Rio de Janeiro, on June 12-14 2010.

Understanding the shortcomings of traditional science education that affect girls and women, the meeting focused on the gender issues in science education and discussed the empowerment of girls and women in Science & Technology, and the role of the Academies in removing obstacles to this enterprise.

This meeting was organized with the support of the Global Network of Science Academies (IAP), the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS), the Special Secretariat of Policies for Women (SEPM), the Brazilian Chapter of the Gender Advisory Board (GAB-Brazil), the Brazilian Innovation Agency (FINEP), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), the National Historical Museum (MHN), and the Earth Sciences Museum (MCTer/DNPM).

Sixth Meeting of the Council of the Science Education Programme
May 2009, Washington D.C.

During the period of May 4-6, 2009, the National Science Resources Center (NSRC) hosted at the headquarters of the US National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., the Sixth Meeting of the Council of the Science Education Programme. Thirteen countries were represented at the meeting.

José Lozano, Chair of the IANAS Science Education Programme, reported on the state of the art of the programme and informed about the execution of the 2008 budget provided to IANAS by the IAP Science Education Programme. The coordinator of the IANAS-FEMCIDI project, Jorge Allende, reported on the activities funded by the OAS since 2007 and also on the upcoming activities in the period of July 2009 to March 2010, when the project ends. Oscar Harasic, representative of the Organization of the American States (OAS) Office of Science and Technology, encouraged and supported the IANAS initiative. Mónica Gómez, FEMCIDI Regional Manager for South America, informed that the proposed budget for 2009-2010 was approved and that the project was positively evaluated and qualified as excellent. However, a new project must be presented for the the period of July 2010 to June 2014, since the project that is currently being performed can not be extended.

The National Focal Points of the Programme also reported on the activities developed by their Academies and presented future plans. It was decided that the Seventh Meeting of the Council of the Programme will take place in Brazil in June 2010. Jorge Allende, María del Carmen Samayoa, Diogenes Campos and José A. Lozano will be in charge of preparing for OAS the proposal for the new project and deciding who will be in charge of the coordination. A proposal to have an annual strategic planning workshop will be presented to the Kellogg Foundation by the NSRC. If approved, the idea is to hold each year a workshop in a different country. Sally Shuler, Pat Rowell and Maria del Carmen Samayoa will be in charge of preparing this proposal.

Third Meeting of the Council of the Science Education Programme
September 2006, Santiago

The third meeting of the focal points of the Science Education Programme was held in Santiago, Chile, on September 27th, immediately after the IAP Workshop on Evaluation of Science Education Projects that was convened on the 25-26 of September, 2006.

The IANAS meeting discussed important issues such as the project that has been submitted by the programme to OAS, the evolution of the national science education programmes, the activities developed in 2006, and the plan of action for 2007. At the meeting the national focal point from Argentina, Norma Nudelman, was elected the new vice-coordinator of the programme, and will be working closely with José Lozano, from the Colombian Academy, who assumed the coordination for the 2006-2008 period. Mexico was chosen as the venue for the fourth focal point meeting.

The IAP workshop discussed the "Report on International Assistance on Evaluation of IBSE Programs", which aims to create an International Platform that could provide assistance in the evaluation of IBSE projects and programmes carried out in different countries of the world. This report was prepared by a multinational Working Group of experts on science education, as a follow-up of the meeting held in Stockholm in September of last year.

Workshop on Evaluation of Inquiry-Based Science Education
May 2-3 of 2006, Rio de Janeiro

Under the auspices of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, IANAS held a "Workshop on Evaluation of Inquiry-Based Science Education" in Rio de Janeiro on May 2-3, 2006. This meeting was organized as part of an international effort by the science academies of the world aimed at the improvement of the quality and pertinence of Science Education in schools.

At the global level, the IAP Science Education Programme will attempt to help improve national programs by conducting research aimed at learning from previous experiences. The initial aim is to produce an international instrument for assistance to those projects that would like to undergo a self-evaluation, which will be useful both for their own and other IBSE efforts.

As a kick-off activity, the IAP Science Education Program convened a Workshop on Evaluation of Inquiry-Based Science Education Programmes in Stockholm in September 2005. At the workshop, it was decided to set up a multinational Working Group of experts on science education that would build on the Stockholm discussions to produce a proposal for a detailed international platform to assist the IBSE projects of different countries.

Based on this meeting and the fact that three out of nine experts of this Working Group are from the hemisphere (Canada, USA and Brazil), the InterAmerican Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS) decided to organize, with the support of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the IANAS Workshop on Evaluation of Inquiry-Based Science Education. This workshop aimed at discussing regionally the ideas from the IAP Working Group established in Stockholm. At the same time, the other Academies in the region would have the opportunity to bring to the table their views and experiences, generating inputs to the multinational Working Group.

The following countries participated in the IANAS workshop: Argentina; Bolivia; Brazil; Canada; Chile; Colombia; EUA; Peru; USA; Venezuela and the Caribbean Scientific Union. The French Academy of Sciences also sent a representative.
